What each type of auto insurance covers — explained in plain English
Auto insurance can be confusing with all the different coverage types, limits, and deductibles. This guide breaks down each type of coverage so you understand exactly what you're paying for and what protection you have.
Quick Reference: "Full Coverage"
"Full coverage" isn't an official term — it generally means Liability + Collision + Comprehensive. It does NOT mean "everything is covered." Always check what your specific policy includes.
Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to OTHERS in an accident.
California minimum: 15/30/5 ($15K per person / $30K per accident bodily injury / $5K property damage). We recommend at least 100/300/100.
Pays to repair or replace YOUR vehicle after a collision — regardless of who's at fault.
Pays up to your vehicle's actual cash value, minus your deductible (typically $250-$1,000).
Covers damage to YOUR vehicle from non-collision events.
Pays up to actual cash value, minus deductible. Glass claims may have $0 deductible in some policies.
Protects you when the at-fault driver has NO insurance or NOT ENOUGH insurance.
~15% of California drivers are uninsured. We STRONGLY recommend carrying UM/UIM equal to your liability limits.
Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident — regardless of fault.
Typically $1,000-$10,000 per person. A good safety net even with health insurance — no deductible and no copay.
Pays for a rental car while yours is being repaired after a covered claim. Typically $30-$50/day.
Towing, flat tire, dead battery, lockout, and fuel delivery. Peace of mind for $2-$5/month.
If your car is totaled and you owe more than it's worth, gap insurance covers the difference. Essential for new cars and leases.
Covers aftermarket modifications — wheels, sound systems, lift kits — that standard policies exclude.
Insurance limits are expressed as three numbers (e.g., 100/300/100):
| Limit Level | BI Per Person | BI Per Accident | Property Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| CA Minimum | $15,000 | $30,000 | $5,000 |
| Basic | $25,000 | $50,000 | $25,000 |
| Recommended | $100,000 | $300,000 | $100,000 |
| Best Protection | $250,000 | $500,000 | $250,000 |
⚠️ California minimum (15/30/5) is dangerously low. A single ER visit can exceed $15,000. We strongly recommend at least 100/300/100.
